The 2018 Non-Profit Finalists

Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines

The Girl Scout's mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. In the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls are challenged to explore science, get outdoors, and engage in their communities. Girls get to lead their own adventures --form teams to identify problems they want to do something about, come up with creative solutions and put their plans into action. And along the way, girls develop a sense of self, learn positive values and form healthy relationships with each other and their neighbors. The Girl Scouts' commitment to preparing the next generation of girls and young women is crucial to making our communities a better place for everyone to live, work and play.

Feeding America

Currently, 41 million people face hunger in the U.S., which includes 13 million children and more than 5,000 seniors. This organization works with approximately 200 food banks and pantries and meal programs throughout the country, including our local Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Every year, the Feeding America network provides 4.3 billion meals, which helps 1 in 7 Americans and serves virtually every community in the U.S.

Marbles Kids Museum

Marbles is the place where our community comes together to PLAY --it's the place where kids and families feel comfortable experimenting with STEM, art, and role-play. It's our local oasis where imagination takes hold and kids are transformed into engineers, veterinarians, marine biologists and carpenters. It's clear that they are always looking to improve --always looking for the next great idea -- always looking for new ways to make kids -- and parents -- smile.

Communities in Schools of Wake County

Communities In Schools of Wake County's SMART Academy provides year-round academic enrichment for typically under served Pre-K to 12th grade students. Certified educators bring together reading and math skills with STEM-focused, project based learning activities to create real world applications. As a result, the program serves as a catalyst for these students to gain exposure and to explore STEM interests and careers.

Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross

The Red Cross is absolutely fundamental to our country's disaster relief strategy, helping our communities in their most desperate time of need. Annually, the American Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters --the vast majority of which are home fires. Even in our own state, Eastern North Carolina alone, the Red Cross responds to about 5 families who've lost their homes to fire every day.
